Her Story

Tawn Mastrey 1954-2007. Tawn was a Veteran Rock/Heavy Metal Disc Jockey for over 30 years. www.tawnmastreyfoundation.com She contracted Hepatitis C when she was a child and didn’t know it until she was diagnosed 30 years later after falling ill.

Tawnino Mastrey age 16

Tawn died very slowly for 7 years, ending up in a nursing home as she needed 24 hour medication care. Her liver failed after going through a horrendous process getting on a list for a liver transplant. Her heart and kidney gave out and the Dr’s had no choice but to take her off the waiting list for a liver as she became too ill to operate.

Tawn was so loved by many from all over the world. She helped launch 100′s of bands who have made it to the very top. A week before she died, (as we were so excited for her to receive a new liver and life), what could I tell her friends and fans as she was too weak to speak for herself. She said, “Please get the word out about hep C to stop the spread ask my musician friends to help, and, Rock Hard LIve Long”.

Tawn died with her family surrounding her hospital bed in a partial coma and in great pain. We told her that she could let go now and that it was ok and that we loved her. I closed her eyes and kissed her goodbye. I began working immediately notifying her music friends and my own to do an album/concert/auction, and have started a foundation in Tawn’s name to spread awareness through music to STOP the spread of the disease.  Tawn said, “my friends will help”.

Hepatitis C virus is a blood borne tragedy that can strike even someone assisting after an accident, or a blood transfusion. Or a result possibly from improperly sterilized needles, repeated ink from tattoo pots, lack of clinic’s sterilization, beauty salons, combs, scissors, re-used needles, piercing sharing, casual passing of a paper cut across a dirty door knob. Traveling to foreign countries are high risk factors in places that don’t have proper sterilization procedures, or if you’ve been to prison or War. Everyone needs to get tested. HCV can live in blood outside of the body for years. Fire can be guaranteed to kill the virus Hepatitis C, but ordinary cleaning solutions do not.

The Tawn Mastrey Foundation Mission Statement

The Tawn Mastrey Foundation was created to make a lasting mark and a truly positive difference in helping to eradicate the Hepatitis C Virus and to stamp out the ignorance about this disease while raising critical awareness worldwide.

Tawn Mastrey, International radio legend known for decades, became a victim of Hepatitis C, (HCV), which took her early from us, devastating her family and millions of radio fans. Tawn and her sister Cara Mastrey, decided at that time, to create an organization that would change lives and help prevent further families from being destroyed by this insidious disease. Tawn contracted HCV accidently as a child and it remained undetected for over 30 years. Too late. HCV is currently at 500 million world wide, and is scheduled to take in 1 billion more by 2015 (.gov).

Because of Tawn’s wishes, and Cara Mastrey’s determination to stop the suffering of others has continued Tawn’s plans to spearhead the effort saving lives by raising HCV awareness, allaying ignorance about the virus through educational tools, and being a conduit to the public of the ‘new’ HCV private self test coming out this year. The statistics are overwhelming about HCV and suggest that many actually have the disease and are unaware. Unfortunately, they may not even know how they may have contracted it, as the disease can incubate inside the body undetected for decades.

Because of Tawn’s many relationships with major rock superstars and musical performers throughout the years, came the idea of utilizing media tools through music, art, entertainment, and also major concert events both nationally and internationally. Tawn Mastrey said, “Rock Hard Live Long” and “Get Tested for HCV”. TMF will be in the forefront of this amazing campaign and raising awareness to free the world of HCV – ‘Slaying the Red Dragon’!

The opportunity of making a difference in actual saving of lives with the raising of awareness, and of the need for organ donors (which are at a catastrophic shortage), and many are not receiving organs that may become available. Given this opportunity to pledge ahead to be an organ donor, gives the gift of life.

These are portions of the arms of Tawn Mastrey Foundation’s efforts in education and awareness and are pooling together resources and partnering in order to continue to make change for the better of humanity.
